TOKYO, October 2, 2023 – TIER IV, a pioneer in open-source autonomous driving (AD) technology, and Proxima Technology, an AI startup company that aims to make model predictive control more accessible, have agreed to jointly research and develop AI for autonomous driving designed for more general purposes.
As a part of open-source AD software development, TIER IV works on creating control AI that can flexibly adapt to a wide range of environmental changes, including vehicle morphology, weather conditions, and road surfaces, aiming for social implementation of AD technology. Separately, Proxima Technology has developed its own control algorithm named “Smart MPC,” a learning control AI that combines model predictive control and machine learning. Through this joint research and development, both companies will leverage Smart MPC to develop AI for autonomous driving.
TIER IV and Proxima Technology aim to eventually incorporate the developed control algorithm into Autoware*, making it available to a global audience as open-source software.
*Autoware is an open-source software for autonomous driving systems based on Linux and ROS. Autoware is a registered trademark of the Autoware Foundation.
