Building an open source ecosystem

TIER IV’s open-source strategy

Building autonomous driving technology together

Open-source software is released under licenses that let anyone access the source code and freely download, use, and modify it. Autoware – open-source software for autonomous driving pioneered by TIER IV – follows this model, providing a shared, standardized platform for intelligent vehicles. With Autoware, companies, research institutions and developers can efficiently create their own autonomous driving systems by combining modular functions. At TIER IV, we believe that advancing technology through open collaboration with partners is our greatest strength.

Autoware overview

Open-source software for autonomous driving

Autoware was originally developed and launched as an open-source project in 2015 by Shinpei Kato at Nagoya University. Built on the Robot Operating System (ROS), it was designed as a research and development platform for researchers interested in autonomous driving. Autoware runs on Linux OS and ROS middleware, offering a comprehensive range of autonomous vehicle functions. TIER IV has led the development of Autoware since its launch, conducting proof of concept tests with Autoware-equipped vehicles around the world.

TIER IV fuels advancements in autonomous driving technology through the development of Autoware. With the open-source software, anyone can begin developing autonomous vehicles, but extensive expertise is required to reach real-world operation.

Autoware community

Global open-source community united by a shared passion for autonomous driving

The Autoware community brings together companies, institutions, and individuals who support one another in developing autonomous vehicles tailored to specific operating environments worldwide. TIER IV supports the community to achieve common goals, attracting new partners, driving the continuous improvement of Autoware and accelerating the deployment of intelligent vehicles.

Bringing Autoware to the world

Motivated by the potential of an open-source ecosystem that everyone can access, TIER IV transferred all rights for Autoware to the Autoware Foundation (AWF), a non-profit organization founded in December 2018. Since its launch, AWF has brought together companies, organizations, and academic institutions to advance autonomous driving research, development, and education, fostering growth across the industry within an open ecosystem. As a founding member, TIER IV contributes to technical committees that guide the direction of the Autoware project and ecosystem, and to working groups dedicated to expanding Autoware’s capabilities.
